Volkswagen Beetle Canada
The Volkswagen Beetle also known as the VW Bug is manufactured by Volkswagen since 1938 with over 30 million Beetles sold today including the New Beetle launched in 1998 and last generation 2011 Beetle A5, making it the most manufactured and sold vehicle in the world. The lovable VW Beetle has fan clubs, Beetle forums and VW Bug drag racing, while the Bug Jam is a VW festival organized every year in the UK since 1987 with thousands of followers throughout Europe. The Beetle was originally made as an economical compact car designed by Ferdinand Porsche based on the original Porsche Type 12 prototype, the Beetle was Volkswagens first "people's car" launched as Volkswagen Type 1, with its unique air-cooled rear engine design Volkswagen. Following WWII the Volkswagen plant was severely damaged and under control of the British Army it continued production of the VW Type 1 Bug.
The first Volkswagen Beetle arrived to Canada in 1952 a few months after Volkswagen Canada was founded and became part of Canadian culture with customizable options and engine upgrades. The Beetle engine is compatible with the Porsche 914 engine which became a car tuning haven for VW Bug rally racing and performance, it can also be retro fitted with the Porsche 911 engine, Subaru and an extreme Chevy V8 modified engine. Over the years the Beetle had one standard 1.5L OHV engine with 54HP. The Beetle has been produced in various other countries including Brazil, Mexico, Australia and Thailand.
In 1994 Volkswagen presented the New Beetle concept sharing the Volkswagen Polo platform which was later used in the compact Audi A1. The Concept One as it was dubbed somewhat resembled the original Beetle, it was until 1998 that Volkswagen officially launched the New Beetle, now based on the VW Golf platform it relocated the engine to the front for a front wheel drive design. In 1999 Volkswagen launched the New Beetle with
a 1.8L turbo charged engine while the standard Beetle was powered by
a 1.6L SOHC engine, with an optional 1.9L TDI turbo diesel engine available mainly in the European market. The VW New Bug in arrived with a 2.0L with 115HP with the optional 1.8T engine with 150HP, the diesel engine was later dropped in 2004 while the New Beetle S trim was a limited version available with a supercharged 1.8L turbo engine with 180HP, special performance body kit and retractable spoiler which made way for the VW Bettle RSi special edition which shared the VW Jetta's VR6 engine with 224HP, only 250 units were built and were specially tuned with performance suspension, brakes and Superturismo 18 inch rims. The New Beetle was named the "Import Car of the Year" in 1999 by Motor Trend Magazine.
The 2011 Volkswagen Beetle A5 dropped the "new beetle" nameplate for simply Beetle, Volkswagen's obvious effort to steer away from the cute - often labeled girly car - revamped the design with sleek looking features shared from the award winning Audi TT which was named Coupe of the Year in 2006. The last generation VW Beetle lowered the bubble-like design for a lower more aerodynamic feel, adding a functional high-class interior than other compact vehicles which are geared towards a lower income demographic, there is nothing overlooked in the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, sharing the
Audi A3 platform also used in the VW Tiguan CUV. The 2012 VW Bug was launched at Oprah's Favorite Things special with the surprise that everyone in the audience won a new car, making it the last car giveaway on Oprah Winfrey Show in 2010. It also made it to the 2011 Super Bowl XLV commercial followed by an international release through MTV World Stage.
The 2013 Volkswagen Beetle in Canada is powered by a 2.5L, 170HP engine coupled with a 5-speed manual transmission and optional 6-speed automatic tiptronic transmission shared by the Beetle Comfortline and Highline trim, while the Beetle Sportline is mounted with a turbocharged 2.0L TSI engine with 200HP and an optional automatic DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) tiptronic transmission with 18 inch allow rims and includes touch screen navigation system and integrated Sirius satellite radio. The Beetle Premiere trim adds full leather interior, Bluetooth and Ipod connectivity with dashboard colour-coded to exterior paint.
